Obituary:
Irvin G. Althage, 86, of Berrien Springs passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Pioneer Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church, 400 University Blvd., Berrien Springs. Burial of ashes will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Andrews University Art Student Fund or Food for the Poor. Those wishing to share a memory or sign the guest book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Mr. Althage was born Oct. 7, 1917, in St. Louis, Mo. to Erwin and Winifred (Vandover) Althage. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Irvin graduated from Washington University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts painting and from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., in 1951 with a master’s degree in fine arts painting. He was employed as an art instructor at Union College in Lincoln, Neb., from 1948 to 1950. Irvin moved to Berrien Springs then founded and was the Chairman of the Art Department at Andrews University from 1951 to 1969. He taught design, printmaking, drawing, painting and ceramics. Following his retirement he worked as a commercial artist for many years at University Press. Irvin has artwork in many exhibitions across the country. Mr. Althage is survived by a daughter, Jill (Larry Lefferts) Althage of Chicago; a son, Craig Althage of Chicago; and his former wife, Joyce J. Althage of Berrien Springs.
