2018-2019 Maplewood Academy Principal
Dr. Glen Baker is a highly experienced educator who has worked in the field of education for over thirty years, with the majority of that time spent in an administrator’s capacity. Dr. Baker was born and raised in the Seattle, WA area. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Theology with a minor in Biblical Languages from Walla Walla University, a Master’s degree (M.Div.) from the Seventh-day Adventist Seminary at Andrews University, a Specialist in Education (Ed.S) degree from Loma Linda University, and a Doctoral degree (Ed.D) from La Sierra University. Dr. Baker’s training has given him the opportunity to work in a variety of capacities including pastor, hospital chaplain, high school teacher, guidance counselor, school registrar, and school principal. He has been a principal at all levels including primary school, middle school, and high school. He is an ordained minister and has also taught graduate level education classes at La Sierra University.
Dr. Baker has a passion for young people and is committed to providing them with challenging and engaging educational opportunities within a framework of a strong and nurturing spiritual and social environment. Dr. Baker has been very active in the communities in which he has served both as a member of the Kiwanis service organization and as a police Chaplain for nearly twenty years.
He has lived and worked in the states of Washington, Oregon, Michigan, California, Minnesota and Florida. Although he started out in the ministry as a church pastor, he shifted into the church’s education work when he was invited to chair and teach in the Bible department at San Gabriel Academy in Southern California. From there he moved into administration at Glendale Adventist Academy, a school he worked at for twenty-two years and served at as principal. He has also served as principal of Tampa Adventist Academy, Puget Sound Adventist Academy in Seattle, WA, and Maplewood Academy in Minnesota. Dr. Baker has also worked extensively in the field of International Education, having lived in Chiba, Japan where he taught English, and in Beijing, China where he was the principal of the Middle School Division of Beijing Huijia Private School, a large IB (International Baccalaureate) school. He also served as the Executive Director for USA operations for Weiming Education Group, one the largest private Chinese education companies and school systems. His experience living abroad and working with students of all cultural backgrounds has helped shape his very inclusive and global perspective on life, cultures, and education. He is currently the principal of Forest Lake Academy.
Dr. Baker has two children. His daughter, Amanda Figueroa, is a kindergarten teacher at a public school in Riverside, CA where her husband is a dentist. His son, Andrew, works in HR for the Adventist Hospital in Lodi, California. Dr. Baker’s hobbies include sports, reading, music, travel and the collecting of historical Adventist books, memorabilia and artifacts, a passion that began when he worked two years for the Ellen G. White Estate while attending the Seminary at Andrews University.
